Machine learning uses statistics techniques to construct a model from observed data. It generally relies on human-defined classifiers or “feature extractors” that can be as simple as a linear regression, or the slightly more complicated “Bag of Words” analysis technique that made email SPAM filters possible back in the late 1980’s.

Picked up by fan site AppleInsider, a newly public Apple patent has revealed the company is working on a folding display which automatically warms at the fold point. Why? Apple explains that folding displays can be damaged when used in cold temperatures, so options such as a heating element or even lighting the pixels on the fold would mitigate the problem.

Data analytics has been around for quite some time, and is used to examine data sets in order to draw conclusions about the information they contain using correlation, statistical modelling and other methods.

Then we invented smartphones, webcams, social media services, and all kinds of sensors that generate huge mountains of data. This brought on the new challenge of identifying the many features in the data— and the correlations between them that actually matter. That’s where deep learning.
Deep learning is a machine learning technique that automates the creation of these “feature extractors” through a process called “feature engineering,” which uses large amounts of data to train complex “deep neural networks” (DNN). DNNs are capable of achieving human-level accuracy for many tasks, but require tremendous computational power to train.

Having previously turned away owners of iPhones with third-party batteries (regardless of the problem being battery-related or not) now Apple’s Genius Bars and Apple Authorised Service Providers (AASPs) are instructed to service and repair them as normal. Furthermore, if a serious problem is found around the battery, Genius Bars and AASPs will be able to replace the entire phone for just the cost of a new battery at their discretion.
